MEERUT: A 20-year-old woman fought two robbers who attempted to rob her 80-year-old grandmother's earrings, in Meerut's Lal Kurti area, on Saturday evening. Two robbers who were on a motorcycle, however, ran away with one earring.
The incident took place at around 5 pm and was recorded in a CCTV camera and it went viral. Police deployed eight teams and within six hours after the incident, both the robbers, Shivam Kumar (25) and Sachin Kumar (24) were arrested.
Police say , Santosh Agarwal, a resident of Modipuram, along with her granddaughter Riya Agarwal (20) was going to a relative's house in Chhota Bajara area of Lal Kurti.
Two bike borne robbers came and snatched Santosh's earrings. Riya caught hold of the bike, pushed it and fought with the robbers. But they managed to flee.
SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan and SP city Piyush Singh examined the CCTV footage. Eight teams were pressed into action arrest the accused.
The officer said a police team found a clue that the robbers fled towards Neel Nagar Market where they examined a CCTV camera installed outside a shop and found the registration number of bike. From that number, they got mobile number of the accused. The mobile number was put on surveillance and their location was traced. Police reached the spot but the robbers opened fire. at them SSP Sajwan said that both accused were arrested after an encounter.
"Riya showed immense courage. She would be honored by the police department," the SSP added.
